Negev LMG: AI-Powered Light Machine Gun Developed by BSS Materiel Undergoes Army Trials At 14,000 Feet (WATCH)

In a major boost to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, India on Sunday successfully tested an artificial intelligence-enabled light machine gun (LMG). The trials were conducted in high-altitude terrain and mark a significant step toward the modernization of the Indian armed forces.

The AI-powered Negev LMG, reportedly developed by Dehradun-based defence firm BSS Materiel Ltd, underwent rigorous trials in collaboration with the Indian Army at an altitude of 14,000 feet, officials told India Today.

According to reports, the AI-integrated system demonstrated the ability to autonomously identify and engage targets in challenging mountainous terrain. The trials were conducted to test both functionality and accuracy under extreme environmental conditions.

BSS Materiel Ltd stated that the Negev LMG showcased stable target acquisition, adaptive fire control, and semi-autonomous surveillance throughout the trials. The weapon also features thermal and optical sensor fusion for precision targeting and includes ballistic compensation for variables like wind, range, and temperature. Additionally, it is compatible with encrypted remote command systems.

Designed with multi-role applications in mind, the AI-enabled LMG is expected to enhance convoy protection and base defence capabilities. Its modular and platform-agnostic design allows integration with a variety of systems—from LMGs to anti-drone solutions—and deployment on unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), tripods, static installations, and remote weapon stations (RWS).

The weapon is equipped with a sophisticated multi-sensor AI module that supports automatic target detection, friend-foe classification, and real-time engagement. Due to these features, the Negev LMV is a next-generation battlefield asset.
