India is likely to get two theatre commands by August 15, reported CNN News 18. According to the report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to make announcement in this regard on August 15. The two theatre commands will be – the Maritime Command and the Air Defence Command. These commands will reportedly become operations on August 15.
The Air Defence Command will have headquarters in Allahabad. This command will control air assets of all the three service wings- Indian Air Force (IAF), Army and Navy. The Air Defence Command will be commanded by a three-star IAF officer. It will protect the military assets from airborne attack. The Maritime Command will have its headquarters in Karwar. It will guard the Indian Ocean region and will be responsible for its security. It will be commanded by a three-star Indian Navy officer. The country will also get three or four integrated commands to secure borders with Pakistan and China.
A theatre command for Jammu and Kashmir will look after the Line of Control and the International Border on the Pakistan front. The concept of theatre commands will bring jointness in the three services and hence will increase operation efficiency. A theatre command is an organisational structure to control all military assets in a theatre of war to achieve mission in a quick time as it will be commanded by a single commander. Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, is given the task to complete project of creating theatre commands by the end of 2022. Notably, the United States and China also have structures similar that of theatre command.
