The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday successfully flight tested a New Generation Nuclear Capable Ballistic Missile Agni Prime. The missile was test fired from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island in Balasore off the coast of Odisha at 10:55 am.
The defence ministry in a statement said, “Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile. Agni P is a new generation advanced variant of Agni class of missiles. It is a canisterised missile with range capability between 1,000 and 2,000 km. The missile is a part of a family of medium to intercontinental range ballistic missiles developed by India. The first Agni series missile, Agni-I, was developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) and tested in 1989.
The development came three days after the DRDO test fired test fired extended range version of indigenously developed Pinaka rocket from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL). at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
