Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman to Get Vir Chakra, 5 IAF Pilots to be Conferred Vayu Seva Medal For Carrying Out Balakot Airstrikes; Yudh Seva Medal For Sqn Ldr Minty Agarwal

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman will be conferred Vir Chakra on Independence day for shooting down Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet during aerial combat which took place on February 27 after Pakistan Air Force (PAF) violated the Indian airspace. In the aerial dogfight, Wg Cdr Varthaman’s Mig-21 Bison was also shot down. Though he ejected safely but his parachute drifted to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot was then captured by the Pakistani Army. He was later released on March 1. Apart from Wg Cdr Varthaman, Squadron Leader Minty Agarwal who intercepted PAF aircraft on February 27 will also be conferred Yudh Seva Medal. The five IAF pilots – Wing Commander Amit Ranjan, Squadron Leaders Rahul Basoya, Pankaj Bhujade, BKN Reddy and Shashank Singh are being awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) for carrying out airstrikes on Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist camp in Pakistan’s Balakot to avenge February 14 Pulwama attack. The IAF conducted airstrikes in Pakistan on February 26 two weeks after the Pulwama terror attack. Meanwhile, Prakash Jadhav of 1 Rashtriya Rifle will be awarded Kirti Chakra posthumously. Jadhav was martyred while fighting terrorists in Kulgham area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district in November last year. Apart from Jadhav, eight other army personnel including Major Vibhuti Dhoundiyal and Lance Naik Sandeep Singh will be conferred Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

Lt Col Anand Subramaniam, Shaurya Chakra Winner Passes Away; Last Rites Performed at His Native Village in Kanyakumari

Lt Col Anand Subramaniam, a Shaurya chakra award winner passed away on June 29 at an age of 34 in Assam. Lt Col Subramaniam hailed from Thakkala Villukuri village of Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district village. Lt Col Subramaniam was suffering from high fever and the infection spread to internal organs. Due to this infection, he became seriously ill. Though the officer was heli evacuated to Jorhat military hospital and put on ventilator but he succumbed to death. When Lt Col Subramaniam became ill, he was serving in Arunachal Pradesh.

Lt Col Subramaniam was awarded Shaurya Chakra for his valiant action in Assam against terrorist attacks in 2010. The mortal remains arrived at Thiruvananthapuram by air. His last rights were performed on June 30 at his village. He is survived by his wife Priyanka Nair and son Karthik Pillai.

President Ram Nath Kovind Presents Gallantry Awards 2019 to Indian Army, Paramilitary Personnel, General Bipin Rawat Receives Param Vishisht Seva Medal

President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday conferred gallantry awards to defence personnel at at the Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. He also presented Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) to General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff at the ceremony. The PVSM is the highest military medal awarded in recognition of peace-time services but not related to gallantry. Apart from Gen Rawat Fifteen lieutenant generals and three major generals have the PVSM.

President  Kovind conferred three Kirti Chakras and fifteen Shaurya Chakras to Armed Forces Personnel for displaying bravery. Two Kirti Chakras and one Shaurya Chakra were given posthumously. Major Tushar Gauba, 20th Batallion, Jat Regiment received the Kirti Chakra for eliminating three hardcore terrorists across the Line of Control in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. Sepoy Vrahma Pal Singh was also conferred with the second highest gallantry award (Posthumously). He laid down his life in a fierce counter-insurgency operation in which three terrorists were killed at Pulwama in J&K in November, 2017. The mother and wife of late Rajendra Kumar Nain, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable, received Kirti Chakra (Posthumous) during Defence Investiture Ceremony. Among the defence personnel who received Shaurya Chakra are Captain Varma Jayesh Rajesh, Major Aditya Kumar, Major Pawan Gautam, Captain Abhinav Kumar Choudhary, Captain Kaninder Paul Singh, Gunner Ranjit Singh, Sapper Mahesh HN and Lance Naik Ayyub Ali. Indian Navy officer, Captain (TS) P Rajkumar received the third highest gallantry award for saving lives during Cyclone Ochki in the southern coast of India.

President Kovind also presented the Shaurya Chakra to CRPF personnel including Head Constable A S Krishna, Constable K Dinesh Raja and Constable Prafulla Kumar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman were also present at the ceremony.

General Bipin Rawat Conferred With Param Vishisht Seva Medal in Recognition of Peace-Time Services

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, a terrorist-turned-soldier who had joined the Army’s 162 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry in 2004, will be conferred the award posthumously by President Ram Nath Kovind on the 70th Republic Day. Meanwhile, Major Tushar Gauba from the Jat Regiment and Sowar Vijay Kumar ((posthumously)) from 22 Rashtriya Rifles have been awarded Kirti Chakra — India’s second highest peacetime gallantry award. Meanwhile, Nine army men have been awarded Shaurya Chakra, the third highest peacetime gallantry.

The Shaurya Chakra awardees included Lieutenant Colonel Vikrant Prasher of 10 Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), Major Imliakum Keitzar from 4th Gorkha Rifles, Major Amit Kumar Dimri from 14 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Rohit Lingwal of 9th battalion, Parachute Regiment and Captain Abhay Sharma, first battalion, Parachute Regiment. Captain Abhinav Kumar Choudhary from 21 Rashtriya Rifles, Lance Naik Ayyub Ali from 9th battalion of Rashtriya Rifles, Sepoy Ajay Kumar, 42nd battalion of Rashtriya Rifles and Sapper Mahesh HN, 44th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles have also been awarded with the third highest gallantry award.
