IMA POP Spring Term 2020: GC Akashdeep Singh Dhillon, Farmer’s Son & Alumnus of Kapurthala Sainik School, Awarded Sword of Honour

Gentlemen cadet Akashdeep Singh Dhillon was awarded the coveted Sword of Honour at the Passing Out Parade (POP) for the Indian Military Academy’s (IMA’s)Spring Term-2020. The IMA POP was held in Dehradun on Saturday. Akashdeep, an alumnus of the Sainik Public School, Kapurthala, belongs to Kairon village of Punjab’s Tarn Taran district. He passed-out from the Sainik School in 2016. Akashdeep’s father Gurpreet Singh is a farmer and mother Barinder Kaur a government teacher. His elder brother Preet Dhillon is an actor-model in Punjabi music industry.

“The shining sword that Akashdeep was holding in his hands was like a dream,” reported Indian Express quoting Akashdeep’s mother as saying. He had got selected for the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2016. After completing three years training at the NDA, Akashdeep joined the IMA in 2019. He played volleyball at the national level. He also has an interest in boxing. IMA POP Spring Term 2020: 333 GCs Commissioned Into Indian Army, 90 Gentlemen Cadets of Friendly Foreign Countries Pass Out From Indian Military Academy.

On Saturday, a total of 423 Gentlemen Cadets of 146 Regular Course and 129 Technical Graduate Course, including 90 Gentlemen Cadets from nine friendly foreign countries successfully passed out from the portals of the IMA. Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane was the reviewing officer of the IMA POP Spring Term 2020.

The ceremony was conducted with due COVID precautions, including wearing of masks, gloves and drill formations adapted to maintain social distancing. Following the protocols of the Indian government, parents of GCs were not allowed to attend the POP. This time for the first time, the entire POP was live streamed on the official YouTube channel of the Indian Army.
