The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Tuesday inducted Light Bullet Proof Vehicles (LBVPs) in a bid to enhance its capability to tackle terrorist attacks on its airbases like the one on Pathankot Airbase. The LBVPs can withstand even grenade attacks. Each vehicle weighs six tonne. These vehicles are manufactured by Ashok Leyland. “The Light Bullet Proof Vehicles (LBPVs) have been inducted into the service and would be deployed at the airbases to be used during any terrorist attack to suppress them,” reported news agency ANI quoting IAF officials as saying. These vehicles can accommodate six Garud Commandoes or members of Quick Reaction Team. More men could be accommodated in the open space in the rear. The vehicles have a unique design. Their engine remains hidden from the front and rear side and due to these reasons they cannot be targeted easily. They are equipped with 6 mm thick armoured protection. Their 40 mm windshield can withstand bullets of AK-47 and sniper rifles.
A gunner can free fire at its target as a canopy covered by armour has been provided in the LBVPs. These vehicles have maximum speed of 100 to 120 km per hour and even can run on flat tyres.
The 2016 Pathankot attack was a terrorist attack which took place on January 2, 2016. A heavily armed group of four terrorists attacked the Pathankot Air Force Station. All the four terrorists were killed in the attack, while two security personnel also attained martyrdom.
