Leh: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has etched its name in the Guinness World Records by constructing the world’s highest motorable pass, Mig La, surpassing the previous record held by Umling La. Mig La is located in Ladakh’s Leh district.
On October 2, 2025, a BRO team reached the summit of the Mig La Pass at an altitude of 19,400 feet (5,913 metres). Earlier, Umling La held the record at a height of 19,024 feet.
The newly built Likaru–Mig La–Fukche road is of great strategic importance. The road passes through some of the world’s most extreme weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures and areas where the oxygen level drops drastically. Notably, the BRO has constructed 11 of the 14 highest motorable roads in the world.

“#BRO creates history again! Border Roads Organisation #BRO has once again created history as Project Himank constructed the world’s highest motorable road at Mig La Pass (19,400 ft) in #Ladakh, surpassing its own Guinness World Record set at Umling La (19,024 ft),” the Indian Army said in an X post.
“The newly built Likaru–Mig La–Fukche road holds immense strategic significance as the third vital axis from Hanle to Fukche, while also boosting tourism in #Ladakh and supporting the upliftment of India’s First Villages. A shining testament to the indomitable spirit, engineering excellence, and unwavering dedication of the #BRO in #NationBuilding,” it added.
Strategic Importance:
The 64 km Likaru–Mig La–Fukche road connects Hanle to Fukche. Notably, Fukche is located just three kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This road forms the third vital axis, significantly enhancing the flexibility of troop movement and logistics in Eastern Ladakh.
Besides its military utility, such roads often open up remote areas to civilian access—encouraging adventure tourism, improving local infrastructure, and potentially spurring economic activity in local villages.
“First Villages” near border regions (remote habitations) are also likely to benefit from this enhanced connectivity.
