Lt. Sangeeta Mall, the wife of martyred Gorkha Rifles jawan Shishir Mall was commissioned into the Indian Army after passing out from the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai on March 9. She is a native of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Sangeeta worked as a teacher before she got married to Shishir in 2013. After his death, she quit her job to take care of her mother-in-law. Sangeeta’s brother-in-law Sushant Mall told The Times of India, “Our family had to face several challenges, but now, it is a matter of pride for us that she has become a commissioned officer. We are planning a grand welcome for her once she returns home.” The lady officer got the motivation to join the Army after she attended an investiture ceremony in Ranikhet in 2016. In the ceremony, the martyred soldier was awarded Sena Medal posthumously.

Shishir was a rifleman in the India Army. He was martyred on September 2, 2015 while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir during the Operation Rakshak. Meanwhile, 36-year-old Bhagyashree Patil, wife of Colonel Viswas Kumar, who died of a cardiac arrest a year ago also commissioned into the Army. Last year in September, Neeru Sambyal, an army man’s widow was also commissioned as Lieutenant in the Army after completing 11 months training from the OTA. Lt. Neeru is a widow of Rifleman Ravinder Sambyal.
On March 9, A total on 172 Gentlemen and Lady Cadets, including those belong to Bhutan and Afghanistan passed out from the OTA. Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, General Officer, Commander-in-Chief, reviewed the parade.
