In a landmark move, lady officers will now be granted permanent commission (PC) in all 10 branches of the Indian Army. The defence ministry in a statement on Tuesday said, “Women officers will be granted permanent commission in the Indian Army in all the ten branches where women are inducted for short service commission.” The statement further added that Short Service Commission (SSC) lady officers would give their option for PC before completion of four years of commissioned service and they would exercise option for grant of PC and their choice of specialisation. SSC lady officers will be considered for grant of PC based on suitability, merit and will be employed in various staff appointment. The ministry had earlier approved the the same for the Indian Air Force. All the branches of the IAF including fighter pilots are open to Lady officers. Whereas, in the Indian Navy, all non-sea going branches/cadre/specialisation have been opened for induction of lady officers through SSC. “In addition to education, Law & Naval Constructor branch/cadre, lady SSC officers have been made eligible for grant of Permanent Commission in the Naval Armament branch, at par with the male officers,” the ministry said. Meanwhile, in Januaru this year, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced to induct women in the Personnel Below Officer Rank (PBOR) of the military police corps for the first time ever. Terming the decision ‘historic’, Nirmala Sitharaman said induction of women in the military police would enhance their representation in the armed forces.
