United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Congo: Indian Army Contingent Carries out Helicopter Landed Area Domination Patrol as Part of MONUSCO in Bwesa

As part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo, the Indian Army contingent carried out Helicopter Landed Area Domination Patrol (HLADP) and conducted extensive interaction with local population at Bwesa. The patrol was in continuation of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo (MONUSCO) Force’ endeavour to proactively ensure protection of civilians. Earlier on May 2, to ensure protection of civilians and to support safe extrication of Child Armed Group Cadres, the Indian Army contingent launched Static Combat Deployment (SCD) at Mpati and successfully extricated 143 Child Cadres for rehabilitation. A similar operation was also launched on April 30 in Mpati. According to a report published in The Financial Express, the 21 RAJ RIF battalion under the UN Blue Helmets is assessing the prevailing security situation and is reassuring the local population of MONUSCO support. Presently, 20,000 UN peacekeepers are deployed in Congo, out of which 4,000 are Indian Army soldiers. According to the United Nations, out of the 3,737 peacekeepers who have died since 1948, 163 have been from India, the highest total from any troop-contributing country. Meanwhile, the MONUSCO took over from an earlier UN peacekeeping operation in Congo – the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) on 1 July 2010. It was done in accordance with Security Council resolution 1925 of 28 May to reflect the new phase reached in the country. The new mission has been authorized to use all necessary means to carry out its mandate relating, among other things, to the protection of civilians, humanitarian personnel and human rights defenders under imminent threat of physical violence and to support the Government of the DRC in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts.
