Garima Abrol, widow of Squadron Leader Samir Abrol, got commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF) as flying officer after passing out from Airforce Academy at Dundigal near Hyderabad on December 19. Last year in July, Garima cleared Services Selection Board (SSB) from AFSB Varanasi in the widow category. She joined the Airforce academy in January this year. On February 1, Sqn Ldr Abrol and Sqn Ldr Siddhartha Negi lost their lives after Mirage-2000 trainer aircraft crashed at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport in Bengaluru. Sqn Ldr Negi died on the spot, while Sqn Ldr Abrol succumbed to injuries after being taken to the Command hospital.

Days after the tragic death of Sqn Ldr Abrol, his brother Sushant Abrol had penned down an emotional poem alleging that corruption in the bureaucracy took his brother’s life. The Combined Graduation Parade at Air Force Academy in Dundigal on Saturday. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was the reviewing officer of the parade. The event saw 114 officers being commissioned into various branches of the IAF. The President’s plaque & CAS sword of Honour was awarded to Fg Offr Ashish Khattri in the Pilots’ course, while Fg Offr Yash Kshirsagar was awarded the President’s plaque in Ground duty branches. It was 100th course passed out yesterday from the AFA since its establishment in 1971.
